How to use Learn

It's the same help you get inside the app. In case you want to read it before downloading, or out in the field with barely any signal.

1. 1Enter your gear once

   In Settings you add your camera and your lenses; in Advanced they're also under «Gear», top right. In Basic mode you don't need to know millimeters: you pick the cameras your phone has —ultra wide 0.5×, main 1× and zoom—, just as you see them when you take a photo. From then on every calculation runs with your numbers, not a generic camera's.

2. 2Read the guide for the style you want

   Each guide is short and ends in a concrete setup. Aperture, ISO and seconds, ready to copy. In Basic mode the guides start from the simplest thing and tell you what to change without naming the technical numbers.

3. 3Use the calculators

   In the «Calculations» tab: pinpoint stars, star trails, ND filters and timelapse. You move the sliders and the drawing beside them moves with you, so you see what each number does.

4. 4Practice in the simulator

   At the top of «Calculations» is the camera simulator: you move the aperture, shutter and ISO and watch the photo change, by day with a waterfall and at night with the Milky Way. The challenges suggest specific photos and, after each shot, «What happened» tells you what to change. With your gear set up, the simulator won't let you do what your lens can't.

5. 5Photo didn't come out?

   Below the simulator, and at the bottom of Today, you pick the photo you didn't like. The app reads what you shot it with, you tell it what's wrong, and it tells you what happened and what to try, with your numbers. If the photo has no data, you enter it by hand.

6. 6Online courses by photographers

   The «Courses» tab introduces each photographer who teaches in the app —their photo, who they are and their links— and below lists their online courses with a cover, a price if there is one, and the link to sign up. Each one is taught and charged for by the photographer.
